This tutorial describes how to set up Outlook Express to use your ASAMnet mail account. Depending on whether the program is freshly installed or is/was already in use (e.g. for an e-mail address with another provider) there are diffent steps necessary to set it up. Just click on the blue colored links to get to the corresponding topic in this tutorial. Following the steps could become quite hard if you have to switch between your web browser and the mail program all the time. Because of this it's advisable to print out this tutorial. In section "First start" we describe the necessary settings for the first start after installation. If you've used the program already, you'll find information about the configuration in the section about later setup.
If you have problems with your account, please have a look at our "Verify data" section to see how you can check that all settings in your mail program are correct. Especially when you have problems sending your mail it often helps to enable SMTP-Auth.
If you use an insecure WLAN for accessing the Internet or if you share your Access with other persons in a network it's recommended to encrypt e-mail transmissions.
When you start Outlook Express for the first time and there are no e-mail accounts configured yet, you'll see a window "Internet Connection Wizard" come up immediately, which asks you for some data. In case this window does not appear, try following the steps from section "Later setup" instead.
First you get the picture you can see on the left. In this dialog enter your complete name right to "Display name:", just like it should appear later as sender next to your e-mail address. Then click on "Next" to get to the next page.
Next you're being asked for your e-mail address. You can find that (together with all other data you'll need while following this tutorial) in your confirmation letter for your membership in ASAMnet. The e-mail address is most often your name with a period between your forename and your surname, followed by the so-called "at sign" and the appendix "asamnet.de". On a german keyboard you can enter the at sign by holding down "Alt Gr" and pressing "Q" at the same time. After entering your e-mail address, please click on "Next".
In case you forgot your access data and also cannot find your confirmation letter any more you can call our hotline at phone no. 0 96 21 / 49 64 26. We'll send your data to you again by postal mail.
In this dialog window you have to enter the names for the server managing your incoming and outgoing mail. For ASAMnet this is in both cases "mail.asamnet.de" (without the quotation marks). When you're finished with entering the server names like in the picture above, please press "Next".
Finally on this page you need to enter your account name and the associated password. Both can be found in the letter you received in the beginning of your membership, too.
The account name is most often eight characters long (but may also be somewhat shorter) and usually consists of letters from your sur- and forename. When typing the password you'll see just dots instead of letters in the input box. This is intended and should prevent other people that might be around to read your password from the screen.
When all data is entered you can continue by clicking on "Next".
Now click on "Finish" to save all the information you just entered. Next you have to enable "SMTP-Auth", because otherwise you could have problems sending your mail under certain conditions. How to do this is explained in detail in the following section.
First click on "Tools" and then select the menu entry "Accounts..." like shown in the picture above. A small window shows up.
Arrived at this step, switch to the list of e-mail accounts by clicking the "Mail" tab. Now select your ASAMnet account from the list. Outlook Express names the accounts after the used mail server by default, thus "mail.asamnet.de". If you manually gave it another name or have multiple accounts with ASAMnet the entry might be called different. When your ASAMnet account is selected, click on "Properties".
Switch to the page with the server settings by clicking on the tab "Servers" on top of the dialog window. To activate SMTP-Auth you need to enable the option "My server requires authentication". When the box is checked you can leave the dialog again with the "OK" button. The window for selecting the e-mail account can be closed, too. Hereby the configuration is completed.
This section is meant for members that already use Outlook Express to access an e-mail address with another provider (e.g. T-Online, GMX, Yahoo, Web.de, etc.). Following this tutorial your other e-mail address will not be deleted, i.e. you'll still receive mail by that address.
Because many steps of the later setup procedure are identic to the steps to take on first start this section sometimes refers to other parts of this tutorial. Please execute all given steps in the referenced part and then return to the point where you left this section.
After you've started Outlook Express, first click on "Tools" and then on "Accounts..." like shown in the picture above. A window titled "Internet Accounts" opens.
Switch to the tab "Mail" by clicking on it. Then press the button "Add" and select "Mail..." from the list.
The following windows are the same as in section "First Start". Perform all steps in that section but do not continue by setting up "SMTP-Auth"; Return here instead.
After you've finished the section "First Start", you should see a window quite similiar to the one shown above. Now we'll make ASAMnet your default mail provider, so that in future all mail will be sent via ASAMnet and your ASAMnet address will be shown as sender. In case you want to keep your previous e-mail address as sender for any reason just skip this step.
Verify that your newly created ASAMnet account is selected from the list (most likely called "mail.asamnet.de") and then click on the button labeled "Set as Default". The text "mail (default)" should now appear right to your ASAMnet account like in the second picture on the left.
For this kind of setup it is also necessary to enable SMTP-Auth in order to avoid problems with sending mail. As the "Internet Accounts" window is already opened from the previous steps you only need to check that your ASAMnet mail accout ("mail.asamnet.de") is still selected from the list. If that's the case please click on "Properties". Now perform step 3 from section "SMTP-Auth" to finish the configuration.
This section describes how you can check your account settings in Outlook Express in case you have trouble sending and/or receiving e-mail.
First click on "Tools" and then on "Accounts..." like shown in the picture above. A window titled "Internet Accounts" opens.
Here you need to switch to the list of e-mail accounts first by clicking on the tab labeled "Mail". Then select your ASAMnet account from the list. Outlook Express names the accounts after the used mail server by default, thus "mail.asamnet.de". If you manually assigned another name or have multiple accounts it might be called different. When your ASAMnet account is selected, click on "Properties" next.
Make sure the following items are filled in correctly:
When you're sure all settings from the "General" tab are ok, countinue with the server settings by switching to the "Servers" page. On this page you need to verify the following items:
When you're finished and maybe corrected something you can close the windows again with "OK" and "Close" respectively. If you still encounter problems with your mail please call our hotline number: 0 96 21 / 49 64 26
Because e-mail is transmitted without encryption by default it is subject to eavesdropping. This is especially an issue when communication is performed through wireless networks (WLAN) or shared internet connections. Enabling encryption doesn't affect the handling of your mail program. Encryption is negotiated completely automatic between your computer and our mail server.
Switch to the page containing the advanced settings by clicking on the tab labeled "Advanced". To enable encryption you have to check the boxes next to "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)" each below "Outgoing mail (SMTP)" and "Incoming (POP3)". Save the changes with a click on the "OK" button and close the account list using the "Close" button. From now on all mail transmissions from or to our server are secured.
In case you have trouble with encryted transmission enabled you can disable it again at any time by repeating the above steps, but uncheck the boxes instead.
