Access to the mailserver

You can access the ASAMnet e. V. mailserver over the web or using a mail client. Here you'll find all the information you need to access the mailserver.

Webinterfce

You have the possibility to access our mailserver from the web. The webinterface enables you to read and send emails. You can find the webinterface here.

Mail client

You can reach our mailserver at mail.asamnet.de This name is valid for fetching of emails (POP/IMAP) and for sending emails (SMTP).

Before you can send mails you have to identify yourself as we have to avoid missuse by spammers. There are two possibilities to do so:

  • POP-before-SMTP
POP-before-SMTP means that you have to fetch mails before you can send emails. This technique works like this: while fetching mails from our server you have to identify yourself, regardless if there are emails in your account or not. Fetching emails makes your IP address known to our mailserver. The IP address is now valid for sending mails for 10 minutes.
It is a good idea to configure the mail client to always fetch mails before sending emails. This procedure makes sending emails work easily.

  • SMTP-Auth
SMTP-Auth means that you have to identify yourself at the mailserver before you are allowed to send emails. This is achieved by sending your account and your password. This makes sure that only our members are allowed to send mails over our mailserver. Useing this methode you don't have to fetch emails from our mailserver before you are able to send mails. Sending username (account) and password identifies you as an authorized user of our mailserver.
When using SMTP-Auth you should setup your mail client to send the account and password information encrypted. Our mailserver offers you the alternatives TLS (Transport Layer Security) or SSL (Secure Sockets Layer). Which one you use depends on your mail client.

Mail concept

There are two different mail servers in the ASAMnet mail concept. These are listed in the DNS as mail exchanger. The internet mail server has a higher mail exchanger priority than the central mail server. Because of this mail servers in the internet try to send mails to the internet mail server first. If this is not possible they connect with the central mail server.

Central mail server

On this mail server resides the configuration and the mailboxes of our members. As already explained on this page this mail server is used by our members to send mails. It only receives mails directly from the internet when the internet mail server is not reachable. This can be caused by high load. This is done by the DNS entries.

Internet mail server

This mailserver only accepts mails from the internet and does some early checks, like header checks. If so far everything is OK with the mail it accepts the mail and sends it to the central mail server for delivery. It can not be used by our members to send mails. If it isn't reachable, because for example of high load, the mail servers in the internet will connect with the central mail server. This is done by the DNS entries.

If the internet mail server has constant high load it is quite simple to add additional internet mail servers.
